In 2023, nearly half of Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program clients were age 50 years and older, reflecting the program's success in helping people with HIV live longer, healthier lives and supporting quality of life efforts through improved access to HIV medications and comprehensive care.
Reaching More Than Half a Million Lives by Increasing Access to HIV Care
The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program provided life-saving care, medication, and essential support services to over 576,000 people with HIV in 2023, an increase from 561,000 people with HIV in 2020, representing more than 50% of people with diagnosed HIV in the U.S.
Housing First: Reducing Critical Barriers to Accessing HIV Care
In 2024, HRSA announced new policy action to facilitate access to housing for people with HIV served by the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program recipients through. guidance that enables—for the first time—the use of Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program funds to cover housing security deposits for eligible clients. This guidance advances critical elements of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy announced by President Biden and the Ending the HIV Epidemic in the U.S. Initiative, and addresses a key barrier that has been raised by patients and advocates, as data show that clients with stable housing have significantly higher viral suppression rates.
Serving Clients New to Care or Who Had Fallen Out of Care
Using innovative models of care that meet people with HIV where they are, the HRSA’s work on the Ending the HIV Epidemic in the U.S. initiative served more than 22,000 clients new to care and more than 19,000 clients estimated to be re-engaged in care in 2022 – nearly double the number of new and re-engaged clients served in 2020.
Expanding the Reach of Life-Saving HIV Medications through the AIDS Drug Assistance Program
HRSA’s AIDS Drug Assistance Program served more than 291,000 people with HIV in 2022 – approximately half of all clients served by RWHAP – ensuring vital access to HIV medications and related services for low-income people with HIV.
Expanding the HIV Workforce
HRSA achieved the highest number of annual training events from the Ryan White AIDS Education and Training Center Program in the past five years, reaching 56,383 clinical and nonclinical health professionals across 12,226 training events. This extensive training network worked to increase the size and strengthen the skills of the workforce to improve the quality HIV care and treatment services across the U.S.
Streamlining Grant Management and Reducing Administrative Burden
HRSA implemented significant grant management improvements that enhanced access to HIV care for both clients and providers, including streamlining client eligibility requirements and recertification processes through new policy clarification notices and reducing paperwork to enable providers to spend less time on administrative tasks and more time delivering direct patient care, while making it easier for clients to maintain their eligibility for life-saving HIV services.
Leading the Nation's Largest HIV Care and Treatment Conference to End the Epidemic
In 2024, HRSA convened the National Ryan White Conference on HIV Care & Treatment, the largest HIV care and treatment conference in the country, bringing together nearly 8,000 HIV care leaders, providers, and community members to share best practices and innovative strategies that empower participants and their communities to continue implementing a national response to reduce HIV-related health disparities and to end the HIV epidemic in the United States.
Expanding Reach to End the HIV Epidemic through Ryan White Program 2030
Building on 35 years of success and innovation, HRSA introduced Ryan White Program 2030 – a framework designed to sustain high-quality HIV care and treatment for people currently receiving RWHAP services while expanding efforts to identify and engage individuals with HIV who are undiagnosed or out of care.
